Getting Along with Difficult People

Our world would be pretty boring if we were all alike. Think about it for a minute; there would be no variety in art, music, movies, or clothes. So, when we encounter difficult people, be thankful that you have variety in your life. Try these five tips for getting along with difficult people, and you may just discover something about yourself in the process.

As humans, we do the best we can every day. I do not believe that someone wakes up in the morning thinking, “Whom could I make miserable today?’ However, we all deserve respect, so, if someone is not treating well, do not put up with any bad behavior. But, be aware of any habitual behavior that you may have. Our ego’s love to find faults in others. It helps the ego to fill superior, better, or in control. It also lowers our consciousness by judging others.

Golden Rule
“What you react to in another person, you reinforce in yourself.”

1. Approach the situation and person with the viewpoint that we are all one. We are all created by God, and we are all a part of the whole. Go beyond the surface issues, raise your consciousness and no matter how difficult someone can be, remember we are all united and all one. Take a “whole-minded” approach instead of a divided approach.
2. Ask yourself, “What is the gift in this situation?’ Is that person meant to teach you patience, confidence, or courage? Rise above the situation and look at it as an opportunity to grow in grace.
3. Look at the other person as if you were their Mother or Father. Would you then view them with love and tolerance?
4. Maybe you are to demonstrate a quality to them? Maybe you can teach them by example: self-control, happiness, or tolerance.
5. Start with yourself. What is the trigger for your reactions? Look internally to see why their behavior bothers you. If you found some negative behavior, you have succeeded!

All these tips require you to change your perspective. Instead of getting angry or annoyed, take control of the situation and change YOUR perspective.

Beautiful Prayer from Paramahansa Yogananda to reflect and meditate on to help you raise your consciousness and get along with difficult people.

“I will speak the truth, but I will at all times avoid speaking unpleasant or harmful truths. I will offer no criticism that is not motivated by kindness.”

Acceptance of the Present Moment

Acceptance of the present moment is a state of consciousness. Acceptance is easy if everything is going exactly as you like it and want it. Your ego is so happy. But, life is not always exactly as we want it. You may have problems in a relationship. You may be in a job that you dislike. You may have a health challenge, or you may be struggling to pay your monthly bills.

By accepting the present moment, you are in a state of peace, and that peaceful energy flows through you. The situation you are in may not be perfect, but, do not fight against the moment. By acceptance, I do not mean that you want and will prepare for something better to manifest. However, resistance, anger or negativity will stop the energy to flow and will hinder your manifestation of something better.

If you plant a seed in the ground for a flower to grow, you patiently wait until it sprouts out of the ground. You do not pull the seeds out if the flower fails to sprout in a day or two. You patiently wait with confidence for the flower to bloom. You have faith in those seeds you planted.

It is the same with happiness even if the present moment is not perfect. Happiness is an interior quality within Divine Order. It is knowing and trusting that in the long run the Divine will win and good will come. Just like the seeds, you planted will produce a flower.

Surrender to the present moment no matter how much you dislike it. Let the peaceful energy flow through you. Take responsibility for your life and your actions. Take steps to change what you dislike about your life and have faith that you can change it. Every moment is temporary. Be active, not passive in every precious moment. Give every moment your full and present attention. Only you control your consciousness and your thoughts.

Sometimes it is hard. Earlier this year, I had big plans to go on vacation out west. I loved the west and was looking forward to the trip. But, the week before my trip, I fell in my bedroom, broke several bones in my foot and needed surgery. So much for the trip. This is not what I wanted or planned. But, rather than become negative and resist the moment, I accepted it. I wanted peaceful energy to flow through me and help with my healing. I believed in Divine order and knew, in the long run, more good, and happiness would come into my life.

Acting in a state of peace will raise your consciousness and your energy. With a raised consciousness, you are in a mental state to receive gifts. Trust the integrity of the Universe.
Flow with the river of life, not against the current.

Create a Morning Ritual

I have my morning ritual; it is a time that I cherish. I believe this time helps me stay centered and calm throughout the day. Most mornings, I get up early, while it is still dark and the world is quiet. I make myself a cup of tea and retreat to my “meditation chair.” It is an oversized, comfortable chair with a large basket of inspirational books next to it. This hour that I spend every morning, is a gift to myself. Most days there are no startling insights: just time to pray, go deep into my soul, and be in God’s presence. This week try to give yourself a gift of silence each morning and create a morning ritual.
My morning ritual consists of meditation, journaling, inspirational reading and sitting in silence. I begin reading and praying while enjoying my tea. Next, I meditate for about 20 minutes. This is followed by journaling and repeating affirmations. Some days, I do not have the luxury of an hour and that is alright. This morning ritual has helped me transform my life from fear based to love based.
Some morning ritual will help you deal with whatever the day brings your way. You are starting the day in a calm, peaceful manner and that will help you remain that way throughout your day. If you carve out even five minutes to read some Bible passages, you will feel a difference and set the tone for your day.
Create Your Morning Ritual
1. Pick out a spot in your home that you can remain undisturbed. It is preferable to have a chair to sit on.
2. Inspirational Reading – Pick out several books to keep by your side. I like to have a variety depending on what my mood is. Currently, I am reading the “I AM Discourses” and “The Power of Your Subconscious Mind” by Joseph Murphy. I also have a book of daily inspirational messages that I read right before my meditation. My old standby is “Around the Year with Emmet Fox.” I usually read for about 20 minutes while sipping my tea.
3. Meditation – If you do not have a meditation practice, a breathing meditation may be the way to start. Sit silently and concentrate on your breath going in and out of your body. When thoughts come, just let them go. Do not engage the thoughts. Just breathe. I set a timer for 20 minutes.
4. Journaling – Buy a special journal that you will use just for this purpose. After meditation, I open my journal and begin to write. I let the pen just flow.
5. Silence and Reflection – Before leaving my chair, I spend a few minutes in quiet reflection and praying and will recite the affirmations that I am currently using.
These are just my suggestions, be flexible and create your morning ritual.

2 Techniques to Release Anxiety

With all the horrible, tragic events going on in our world, it is easy to absorb the energy from these events. Even if you weren’t directly affected, watching the news and feeling sorrow and empathy for the many tragedies will create anxiety and affect your energy. It is important during times like these to take the time to relax and release any anxiety or tension. Try these 2 techniques to release anxiety.

Breathing Technique
Breathing exercises are effective to release stress. Usually, we take our breathing for granted, but, with practice on this technique, you will have a great tool to use.
First, I want you to lie on the floor and put one hand on your chest and one hand on your abdomen. Take a deep breath in and then breathe out. Did the hand on your abdomen rise and expanded the most? If not, you are doing shallow breathing. To use breathing effectively, you need to practice abdominal breathing.
Practice abdominal breathing for a few minutes. Imagine that your abdomen is a balloon and that as you inhale you are filling it up with air. Keep your hands on your chest and abdomen to see where the expansion is. Now that you can do deep breathing practice the following techniques.

Breathing for Letting Go of Tension
1. Inhale and say to yourself, “Breath in.”
2. Hold your breath a moment before you exhale.
3. Exhale slowly and deeply as you say to yourself, “Relax.”
4. As you hold your breath for a moment, notice any parts of your body that you are holding tension. When you exhale, feel the tension leave your body.
5. Practice this for five to twenty minutes at a time.
6. Practice it in non-stressful situations a few times a day. When you are comfortable with the technique, practice it in stressful situations.

Use of a Mantra

A mantra is a short phrase or word that requires no special tools to use and over time can transform your consciousness. It is a simple spiritual practice that you can put into practice starting today.

“A mantram or mantra, as it often called – is a powerful spiritual formula, which, when repeated silently in the mind, has the capacity to transform consciousness. Eknath Easwaran

Select a mantra that works for you. There are mantras from all the religious traditions, and I have listed several examples below. Once you choose a mantra, silently repeat it. Repeat it while you are walking, while you are falling asleep, or while you are doing your chores. That is, it!

When you are stressed, repeat it, until the anxiety passes. Over time, it will become more and more powerful for you. Gandhi called his mantra, “His staff of life.” Start today to choose one, begin silently repeating it and you will have a staff of life.
