How to Direct Your Thoughts

The high school shooting in Parkland was heartbreaking for many people. The high school is located about five miles from my home. Though all the horrible shootings make me sad, this one, that was in my backyard traumatized me the most. The streets and restaurants in Parkland are eerily empty. The gym I go to in Parkland likewise has been empty all week. As I am on the treadmill, watching the television, it is surreal to see the candlelight vigil that was held just a few blocks away. While at the gym, I wondered how many of the members were personally affected by this tragedy. How many parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, or neighbors are in mourning? Their lives never to be the same.

This week, it was hard for me to focus and hard to stay positive. I felt my energy low and negative. It was a struggle this week to remain in any routine. Of course, I prayed, light candles and meditated and that is what provided relief. From all my work, I know that by raising my energy and vibration, it will help others. I wish I could bring back all seventeen that died or wish I could take the pain away from the families, but, I cannot. What I can do is keep my thread to God alive.

This video was recorded before the shooting, but, the tool described will help you deal with tragedy. It will help you stay focused in the present moment. The goal is to direct your thoughts instead of just “thinking.” When our thoughts wonder they usually go to past regrets or worries about the future. Let’s all try to stay present and send healing love, prayers and light to the Parkland community.

When we are mindful in the present moment, we can think more clearly, and maybe we can decide, what can we do to prevent further tragedies?

But, in that time you will see results and will start a new track. You cannot want change in your life and leave your mind unchanged. Here are the seven points to keep in mind for your three-day mental diet:

1. Before you begin, spend a day or two in preparation. It is best not to start this if you know it is going to be a stressful week,
2. To train your mind during these three days, no negative thoughts. Only thoughts that are positive, constructive, and optimistic can be entertained. Thoughts of failure, fear, criticism, judgment of yourself or others are banned for the next three days.
3. If you are with someone that talks negative, do not engage in the conversation. Change the subject.
4. To remind yourself that you are on this diet, wear a unique bracelet, or a rubber band around your wrist, carry a crystal or post-it notes. Use whatever will work for you as a reminder.
5. When negative thoughts come up: think of something or someone that brings you joy, think of God, or say an affirmation.
6. Keep this to yourself, until the three days are up.
7. If any difficulties arise, hold steady like a rock and know when everything settles, your world will be better.
You will be amazed by this reset. Transform your life by renewing your mind.

The Power of Visualization Technique

All growth is from within and visualization is a fantastic tool to help. The world within gives the cause and the world without the effect. It is important to control our thoughts to bring desirable conditions. “Right thinking” can be learned to manifest what you desire in your life. A new relationship? A new job? More money? A new home?

For visualization to be most effective, you need to believe in the images and as the experience becomes effective your belief will deepen. The tool explained in this video can help you kick-start your process. It is preparing your mind to accept and become receptive to the helpful images. I like to refer to it as Step One in the Visualization learning process.

Setting Boundaries

Setting boundaries can be difficult in some areas of our lives. You may have no trouble with boundaries at work or with your children. How about boundaries with your family members or with friends? Or most important; boundaries with yourself? It is essential to be aware of and establish personal boundaries with ourselves, only then can we set boundaries with others. I equate it to the oxygen mask on planes. The flight attendant says, “Place the mask over your face before placing the mask with any children you are traveling with”.

If we begin with ourselves then, it will be easier to establish other boundaries in our lives. By doing this you will empower yourself and become more confident. This will give you self-fulfillment and then you can freely give of yourself to others: your children, your family, and your friends. It is like putting gas in the tank of your car. If there is no gas, the car stops. If “your tank” is empty, it is hard to lead a happy, peaceful life.

Sometimes we feel guilty for doing things for ourselves or taking time for ourselves. There are all the “shoulda’” and “have to dos”. We get stuck in routines at work and at home. We go on autopilot and before we know it, we are exhausted and drained.

This week’s exercise is to create a “Boundary” for you.

1. Pick something that you enjoy doing: meditating, playing music, exercising, or reading. Have it something you look forward to doing, not something that is guilt driven.
2. Schedule this activity for 30 minutes to 1 hour each day for the next week. Put it on your calendar.
3. If you have children or roommates, put a “Do Not Disturb” sign on your door. This is your special time to renew and refresh your soul.

By empowering yourself to do this, it will carry over into other parts of your life.

Gratitude is a Powerful Practice

Gratitude is a powerful practice. It can affect you both physically and spiritually. Research shows that gratitude lowers blood pressure, helps your immune function and helps with cardiac health. Spiritually studies show that it improves happiness and well-being. Even you are going through a difficult time, there is always something to be grateful for. Did you have clean water to drink today? You woke up today. A lot of people might have had been plans today, but, never woke up.

Gratitude can open doors for more grace to enter your life. It helps align your thoughts with what you want to enter your life. We usually know what we ought to do, but, never actually wind up doing it. You can make a decision to have a daily practice of gratitude. It will help your thoughts stay positive. Negative thoughts are like velcro, they stick with us. Positive thoughts are like Teflon, they are non-stick. Let’s start today to make an effort to increase those positive thoughts.

This video describes five different ways.

1. Gratitude first thing in the morning. Keep a note on your mirror to remind you.
2. If in a difficult situation, look for the blessing or gift that situation brought you.
3. Write a gratitude letter.
4. Make a gratitude visit to someone.
5. If you received a gift you loved, pay it forward and buy it for someone else.

Think of your mind as a garden. We want beautiful flowers to grow in our garden, not weeds. Gratitude will help you grow those flowers. This week make a commitment to incorporate just one of these five suggestions and see how you feel.  Or you may have your own special ideas. I would love to hear about them and share them.
